Surfside Beach sits on the South Strand between Myrtle Beach and Garden City, with Hwy 17 Business through town and Hwy 17 Bypass on its west edge.

A median age of 57 says it all: walkable beach accesses, golf-cart streets, a hospital ten minutes away and gated communities like Oceanside Village make Surfside an easy retirement landing.

West of the Bypass, subdivisions like Ocean Palms and Surfside Beach Club start in the $300Ks — a genuine beach-town address with St. James schools, minutes from the airport.

Oceanfront and east-of-Business cottages command premium prices and rents; short-term rentals are allowed only in certain zones under a town license, so verify zoning per parcel before buying.

Surfside Beach is a real town — its own council, police and library — wrapped around two miles of oceanfront with 36 public accesses. About 4,200 residents and a median age of 57 give it a calm, neighborly, year-round feel that earned the “Family Beach” nickname and, in 2016, the country’s first autism-friendly destination certification. A new pier, a weekly farmers market and golf-cart streets add everyday charm, with Myrtle Beach only 13 minutes away.
It is really two markets. East of Hwy 17 Business, beach cottages, raised homes and condos near the pier trade at premium prices. West of the Bypass, established subdivisions and newer communities like Ocean Palms, Belle Mer and Surfside Beach Club sit from the $300Ks into the $600Ks. Zillow’s typical home value is about $361K (June 2026), roughly flat year-over-year, with homes going under contract in about 40 days.
Surfside Beach is roughly 8 miles south of central Myrtle Beach — about a 13-minute drive up Hwy 17 Business or Bypass — and about 13 minutes from Myrtle Beach International Airport. Garden City is five minutes south, Murrells Inlet’s MarshWalk and Tidelands Waccamaw hospital are about ten minutes, and Conway is under half an hour.
